In Russia, there are over 500,000 orphans. However, 95% of them have living parents who, for various reasons, are unable to take care of them. Only 10% of Russian orphanage graduates are able to fully adapt to independent life after leaving institutional care. Only 2% of orphan graduates enter universities compared with 45% of young people who grow up living with their families.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Russia (BBBSR) was established in 1992 to bring BBBS International’s widely respected model of one-on-one adult-youth mentoring to Russia. BBBSR partners primarily with internats (institutional residences for abandoned/orphaned children) and local schools, as well as local government education and social service agencies.
EMpower’s 8th grant to Big Brother Big Sister Russia supports the organization to implement key components of its new strategic plan (fundraising and communications) and to develop and launch a public communications campaign to raise its profile, recruit individual donors and rebalance its funding base.
