Global Reach: Past Grantees

Fundación Cruzada Argentina (FCA)

Context:

In Argentina, 42% of young people ages 18-24 years have not completed secondary school, 81% have never participated in any formative training course, and 75% have no formal work experience. In northeastern Argentina, these statistics are worse – the Chaco and Corrientes provinces rank in the worst 5 of 23 regarding social and economic indicators. Poverty, malnutrition, and unemployment are widespread. The poverty that drives young people to earn money at a young age raises the probability of their dropping out of the educational system (both due to their employment as well as the social exclusion they face), thus affecting their future possibilities of obtaining quality jobs. These youth need viable alternatives to expand their future prospects.

Organization:

FCA supports rural and peri-urban communities in 3 provinces of northeastern Argentina through local income generation and entrepreneurial initiatives, basic material assistance for primary schools, and a secondary school strengthening programme that works in partnership with students, teachers, administrators, and parents to establish sustainable school-based programmes in entrepreneurship and employability. FCA began in 1989 as a charity initiative among JPMorgan Argentina employees to provide basic assistance to needy rural communities in northern Argentina. When FCA was established as an NGO in 2002, it shifted its strategy to focus on empowering communities to become economically sustainable. Its 3 pillars of work focus on youth, education, and labour inclusion.
