Vice President, Global Development

This new, full-time position is based in London, will report to the President and be part of the senior management team of an established, dynamic philanthropic organization with a global footprint. We’re looking for a proven leader to guide the Development team responsible for the revenue enabling our organization to create impact and change the lives of young people living in poverty. EMpower’s revenue comes from a blend of major donor, corporate, foundation, events, and campaign support, with a historical and important focus on the finance sector. All sources present important opportunities for growth and require a visionary leader to work with the President and the teams to take EMpower to the next level.

EMpower, a global philanthropic organization, is dedicated to improving the lives and horizons of marginalized young people ages 10-24 in 15 emerging market countries in Africa, Asia, Latin America, Russia and Turkey. Through grants and other supports, EMpower partners with over 100 local organizations working to strengthen the education and livelihoods of young people, and to build their resilience, self-confidence and well-being. EMpower has offices in Hong Kong, India (Delhi), Singapore, London and New York, as well as program staff in Istanbul.

Essential to this role is experience of major gifts, corporate partnerships, high profile events organization and charitable fundraising campaigns. As this role works closely with EMpower’s regional board directors, experience and comfort working with senior professionals is vital.

You will work closely with the President and the development staff to create a multi-year global fundraising strategy and to execute on annual fundraising plans in each region. In this position, you’ll be both a player and a coach— coaching the development teams in the US, India and Hong Kong and supporting the achievement of their fundraising strategies. In the UK – home base – you also will personally identify and steward trusted relationships, and creating and building new fundraising strategies.

You will work in a global, agile team environment characterized by collaboration, recognition of each staff person’s contributions, and camaraderie and where excellence is expected. You coach two high-performers in London, and currently one each in Hong Kong, India (Delhi) and the US (New York).

Responsibilities:

  • Strategy: Develop and lead global strategy for EMpower’s development team, with differentiated goals in each fundraising locale (UK, India, Singapore, Hong Kong, US). You’ll be accountable for revenue goals, for the retention of existing donors and the strategic building of new donors.
  • Manage: Lead the team to ensure excellent delivery and experiences for all key stakeholders, and to deliver on their annual fundraising plans.
  • Public Speaking: Be one of EMpower’s external representatives, and attend events and conferences to increase EMpower’s visibility and thought leadership in giving spaces.
  • Communications: Work closely with the Communications team to effectively utilize and contribute to materials and strategies to assist fundraising efforts.
  • Operations: Provide leadership and oversight to ensure quality, best practices on fundraising operations and systems (including revenue forecasting, pledge fulfillment, cultivation and stewardship, prospect research, reporting, donor-related record-keeping), and strong coordination with the Finance team.
  • Team Culture: Maintain an environment of excellence and camaraderie, lead by example, and provide coaching and management to the global team of development professionals.
  • Organization-wide role: As an individual and through an active role on the senior management team, contribute to strategy, effective cross-team collaboration and solutions, team-building and demonstrated core values.

Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of relevant experience in nonprofit fundraising, with some of those years focused on developing and delivering on a global strategy
  • A commitment to and energy for EMpower’s mission
  • 10+ years of experience managing and growing a successful, high-performing team of professionals
  • A problem-solver who is calm under pressure, has a sense of perspective and humor
  • Demonstrated ability to cultivate positive internal and external relationships across a diverse set of stakeholders – excellent relational skills.
  • Strategic thinker with ability to execute with excellence and deliver on accountabilities
  • Entrepreneurial mindset with the ability to spot and leverage new opportunities
  • Flexible, nimble, able to work effectively with team across geographies and time zones
  • Proficiency with fundraising, donor relations and customer relationship management (CRM) systems - experience with Salesforce for Nonprofits preferred.
  • Enjoys and is highly experienced in working with nonprofits Boards of directors, including senior finance professionals
  • High degree of diplomacy, tact and discretion
  • Excellent persuasive skills – oral and written
  • Bonus points for bringing existing relationships with donors, companies or foundations with high potential to become EMpower partners
  • Willingness and ability to travel (~20% time)
