EMpower’s grantee partner, Roots of Health (ROH), were featured in a short documentary investigating the issue of teenage pregnancy in the Philippines. The 25 minute documentary was produced by Al Jazeera’s documentary program, 101 East and touched on the important work that ROH are doing to combat this issue.

Executive Director Amina Evangelista Swanepoel and a ROH Youth Advocate were featured in the documentary, as well as two beneficiaries of their program. ROH’s work in Palawan is indispensable, where youth have little, if any, access to information on reproductive health or contraception.

They provide this much-needed information to marginalized communities as well as college, high school and university students with the aim of improving their health and general quality of life. By providing health education sessions and health services, ROH’s mission is to enable young people and families to lead healthy reproductive lives as well as empower women and girls to secure their right to health and freedom from violence. In doing so, ROH hope to reduce the incidence of maternal mortality, and delay or prevent unwanted pregnancy.
