Theodoros Chronopoulos is the Senior Programme Officer for Africa and Russia responsible for developing strategy and managing grantee partnerships in the regions. Having played a critical role in developing EMpower’s safeguarding regime, Theodoros now acts as the organisation’s Designated Safeguarding Lead.
Prior to joining EMpower, Theodoros led the Social Justice Programme of the Sigrid Rausing Trust which used philanthropic resources to support innovative strategies designed to strengthen accountability for human rights violations perpetrated in the pursuit of economic development. As a result, activists and communities in Asia, Africa, Latin America and Europe were able to build legal instruments, bring transparency and accountability to public and private development financing institutions and protect human rights defenders. Previously, he worked for the Canon Collins Trust and ActionAid UK.
Over the last 20 years, Theodoros has worked with activists and NGO leaders in Africa and Europe, facilitating communities of practice, co-designing and implementing research, learning and reflection projects and collaboratively developing strategies to strengthen social and economic rights and public participation in decision-making.
Theodoros is proud to be on the boards of directors of the International Accountability Project and Re-course as well as on the advisory board of the Environmental Defenders Law Centre.
Theodoros holds an MSc in Social Anthropology from the London School of Economics.
