Education as a Vaccine

Context:

Nigeria is the most populous country in Africa with a population of approximately 170 million; nearly one third of this is between the ages of 10 and 24. 64% of the population lives below the international poverty line of $1.25 per day. Nigeria has an HIV adult prevalence rate of 3.1% and 3.4 million people living with HIV (only South Africa has a larger HIV+ population). Young people account for 30% of HIV+ cases in Nigeria.

Organization:

Education as a Vaccine (EVA) was established in 2000 to combat the rapidly growing HIV/AIDS epidemic in Nigeria. Using youth-friendly approaches, the organisation strengthens the capacities of young people and other stakeholders to facilitate and sustain social change in the areas of health and education. EVA organises comprehensive sexual and reproductive health (SRH) programmes and campaigns in secondary schools and communities within four states (Federal Capital Territory; Benue; Nasarawa; and Cross River State).
