Global Reach: Past Grantees

Centre for Biodiversity and Indigenous Knowledge (CBIK)

In Benzilan Township (located in Deqin Prefecture, a Tibetan majority area inside Yunnan province, which borders Tibet proper), CBIK works with the local Tibetan community to develop fair trade wooden handicrafts as a means of income generation which promotes local culture and identity. EMpower’s grant helps CBIK address several key obstacles in the continuing development of a traditional wooden handicraft factory in the Deqin Tibetan Autonomous prefecture, allowing for the preservation of traditional handicraft skills, the development of marketing and enterprise management skills, and language training.

CBIK is a partnership between scientists, academics, resource managers and development practitioners to promote sustainable development in south western China’s rural ethnic minority areas.
