On 23rd March 2017, the Spring Grants Meeting in the UK approved new grants supporting eight organizations that are working to empower at-risk youth, totaling $278,500. It was a lively meeting with over 25 EMpower Board Directors, Underwriters and donors! Grantee partners receiving funding include:

Sulukele Volunteers Association (SVA), Turkey: EMpower’s first grant to SVA will support the delivery of a program for 36 vulnerable children (aged 10-14) to improve their physical and psycho-social well-being, with the ultimate goal of ensuring continued enrollment and performance in school.

Bright Future, India: EMpower’s second grant to Bright Future will enable 140 girls and 60 boys to gain employability skills training and placement support. With EMpower’s assistance, Bright Future will incorporate participatory, girl-centered monitoring and evaluation (M&E) tools such as the Girl-Path, to address the barriers girls face while pursuing career goals.

Ikamva Youth, South Africa: EMpower’s final “sunset” grant to Ikamva Youth would enable progress towards its strategic objectives and targets through 2018, expanding its reach and impact, and further strengthening its financial sustainability through salary support.

Kallpa, Peru: EMpower’s fifth grant to Kallpa will cover general support such as salaries for management, administrative, and fundraising staff, and program components in night schools including continued training/support of teachers and students, installation of mini youth employment centers and strategic network/alliance initiatives.

Nordelta, Argentina: EMpower’s sixth grant to Nordelta will support young people with personal development training and recreational activities, educational tutoring and employability training for insertion into the labor market. It will also support the organization to become more youth-centered through youth involvement in program design, implementation and M&E.

A further $130,500 has been approved internally to grantee partners such as Alternativa (Peru), Jan Sahas (India) and Upsala Circus (Russia).

Many thanks to Finisterre Capital, an EMpower Underwriter, for hosting the meeting!
