EMpower visits China to see grantee partner work in Sexual and Reproductive Health

In mid-November Gritt Richter, EMpower’s Senior Program Officer for East and Southeast Asia and Anyan Wang, HK Operations and Program Assistant, traveled to Kunming in the south of China to meet one of EMpower’s Chinese grantee partners, the Yunnan Youth Development Centre (YYDC). The YYDC trains university students and migrant school teachers through its Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) program, which is currently the only provider of SRH in Kunming. Trainees are enabled to educate other young people on these sensitive issues across different schools in Kunming and its surrounding areas.

During the two-day visit, Girtt and Anyan had the chance to travel with the highly committed local YYDC team to a rural primary school in the mountainous area of Yunnan. Here they discussed the program with migrant and left-behind children from different ethnic minorities, as well as exchanging with the teachers. The second day was dedicated to learning more about how EMpower’s current grant is supporting YYDC’s SRH work, and to discussing in depth YYDC’s next grant proposal.
