Position Summary

The Planning and Governance Officer will work with the President and CEO (called CEO hereafter), the Senior Leadership Team, and other staff so EMpower achieves organizational priorities and works effectively with the Boards of Directors and other key stakeholders.  They also facilitate internal communications, acting as glue to ease communications and unite people towards common goals.  This position will support the management of the organization’s growth, capacity, and resources. Our ideal candidate is someone who can think broadly and strategically about our work, excels at streamlining processes and problem-solving, and displays strong communication and stakeholder management skills.

The Planning and Governance Officer is highly computer savvy, including project management software, and effectively prioritizes tasks in a cross-functional environment. This position requires the ability to interact with a broad spectrum of people, and with colleagues and Board in other geographic locations. They are resourceful in building relationships across the larger EMpower ecosystem. 

Planning and Organizational Systems Strengthening

  • With understanding of organization’s culture and structure, and working with other team leaders, develop and implement effective ways to improve procedures, processes and planning.
  • Lead annualplanning process for the organization as project manager, ensuring alignment with the CEO, senior leadership team, Global Director of Finance and Technology.
  • Work with relevant Directors to improve currentprocesses and coordinate organizational procedures for optimized efficiency and productivity.
  • Manage the organizational workflow calendar for smooth cross-team work and avoidance of major workstream clashes.
  • With other stakeholders, plan occasional senior leadership and other team/staff retreats


  • Working with the CEO, liase effectively with EMpower’s three Boards of Directors and other externalstakeholders.
  • Work with the CEO and Board Chairs for effective Board meetings, including agenda-setting, preparation of materials and presentations, documenting votes and decisions, finalizing transcribed Minutes, and managing Board records. 
  • Manage CEO’s stewardship of Directors and top tier Leadership Council members.

Internal Communications

  • Serve as the key point person on internal communications, seeking to build cohesion across teams and EMpower globally, via staff meetings, periodic emails, communications protocols for shared drive etc.
  • Ensure smooth and efficient information flow between internal stakeholders. 
  • Collaborate with CEO and the Global Lead, People and Culture to foster a success-oriented, positive, high integrity organizational culture
  • Research, compile and prepare background materials for use in team communications.

  • Demonstrates emotional intelligence and cultural competence when interacting with colleagues and other stakeholders who come from diverse walks of life
  • Strong growth mindset and ability to learn from setbacks; creative problem-solver 
  • Exhibits excellent judgment, decision-making skills, discretion and the ability to maintain confidentiality 
  • High level of proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Experience with project planning tools, such as Asana.

The Officer will report to the President and CEO, who is based in New York. They can be remote (or hybrid depending on finalist’s locale) but must be able to overlap with NY working hours at least 50% of every day.
