EMpower supports local organizations in EM countries that provide at-risk youth with the tools and resources they need to lead healthy, productive lives.
We believe that all young people, no matter their life circumstances, deserve the opportunity to create healthy, productive lives. They also can be a critical, often untapped resource for every country. Our strategic investments in locally-led organizations unlock the potential of young people to change their lives and to lead change in the world around them.
The Emerging Markets Foundation is a global philanthropic organization that connects the resources of Emerging Markets (EM) professionals worldwide with the vitality of local organizations in emerging market countries. EMpower develops partnerships with local community-based organizations in EM countries, working to improve the lives of at-risk young people as well as to create communities where all youth can thrive. Our partnerships can last up to 10 years and advance through phases that typically include: financial support in the form of grants; technical assistance that facilitates the organization’s growth and development; and knowledge-based support to convene and network organizations and individuals, to share best-practices, replicate and scale successful programs.

EMpower was founded in 2000 in New York City by financial professionals from the emerging market (EM) community who wanted to give back to the countries where they did business. EMpower’s strategic focus was refined in 2005 to focus on at-risk youth (ages 10-24) in EM countries. In 2007, we opened a London office and a Hong Kong office in 2011. EMpower has strong, highly engaged and active Boards and Underwriters in its 3 locations. Currently, we partner with local organizations in 15 EM countries.
The term “EM country” commonly refers to industrializing nations of the world. Such countries are considered to be in a transitional phase between a developing and developed economy with middle (or lower) per capita income, and often marked by sharp economic inequalities. EM and developing countries constitute about 80% of the world’s population, and represent nearly 50%– and rapidly growing—share of the world’s economy.
Our Underwriters pay for all of our administrative and fundraising costs, so 100% of your donation goes directly to empowering at-risk youth.
