Areas of Focus
To help young people successfully transition to adulthood, we invest in programmes that expand opportunities so they can learn, lead safe and healthy lives, and access local economies and markets.
Keeping gender equity and inclusion at the heart of everything we do; we have three priority impact areas: inclusive learning, economic well-being; and safe, healthy lives. These are core elements all young people need to thrive and to transition to a safe and productive adulthood.
Our impact areas align with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which sets forth goals for scalable progress, emphasizing their universality and interconnected character. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) which most specifically relate to the work EMpower supports are SDG 3: Good Health and Wellbeing; SDG 4 Quality Education; SDG 5 Gender Equality; and SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth.
Recognising the interconnected nature of these three impact areas—and others—we support holistic programming.
Youth in EM countries are a large and growing group, often constituting a third or more of their country’s population. They are filled with creativity, energy, intelligence and hope, yet many face challenges and circumstances that stymie their growth and prevent them from achieving even modest life goals.
This crucial time of transition—the journey from childhood to adulthood—is when youth develop skills and make decisions that will shape the rest of their lives and by extension, the futures of their families, their communities, their countries and the wider world. Adolescence and young adulthood is the time when they are most at risk as well as most “at potential.” If, during this critical age, youth can learn useful knowledge for the 21st century, learn how to be healthy, gain self-confidence and leadership abilities, and develop skills to find dignified work, they will have the blueprint for a successful life.
