Context:
In Russia, there are over 500,000 orphans. However, 95% of them have living parents who, for various reasons, are unable to take care of them. Only 10% of Russian orphanage graduates are able to fully adapt to independent life after leaving institutional care. Only 2% of orphan graduates enter universities compared with 45% of young people who grow up living with their families.
Organization:
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Russia (BBBSR) was established in 1992 to bring BBBS International’s widely respected model of one-on-one adult-youth mentoring to Russia. BBBSR partners primarily with internats (institutional residences for abandoned/orphaned children) and local schools, as well as local government education and social service agencies.
