Oaxaca has the highest rate of pregnancy- and childbirth-related deaths in Mexico, as well as the highest rates of intimate and partner violence. In rural, indigenous communities across the state, where nearly a quarter of women are married before they turn 15, Grupo de Estudios sobre la Mujer Rosario Castellanos (GESMujer) invests in building women’s leadership through a scholarship fund for indigenous girls, a women’s resource center and a female student dormitory in the city of Oaxaca, and a range of community training programs aimed at building girls’ leadership and political agency.
