$458,500 Approved at HK Grants Meeting!

The 2^nd grants meeting of the fiscal year took place in Hong Kong on 25 January, with 45 participants, half of whom were first-timers to an EMpower grants meeting. A total of $458,500 was approved in 7 grants to partners in Hong Kong, India, Indonesia and the Philippines. Thank you to everyone who attended!

EMpower grantee partners continue to respond to the pandemic in their local communities and address the heightened needs of marginalised young people through these challenging times. EMpower is committed to supporting young people in emerging market countries. Below is a short summary of the approved grants that we are supporting:

Lend a Hand, India:
($101,000 for 24 months) EMpower’s final grant to Lend a Hand India will support a technological upgrade to scale their skills training programme for youth in two states and a pilot coalition building initiative to train a network of organisations in India to develop and implement multi-skills training for in-school youth.

Feminist Approach to Technology, India ($52,000 for 24 months) EMpower’s first multiyear grant to Feminist Approach to Technology (FAT) will provide a curriculum-based training in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) subjects to 75 adolescent girls through an Innovation Lab in Lajpat Nagar, Delhi.

Joint Operation for Social Help (JOSH), India ($76,000 for 24 months) EMpower’s first multi-year grant to JOSH will support the implementation of its blended learning programme focussed on employability and leadership development of young women. The programmes includes aspects regarding gender-based discrimination and the negative economic outcome of COVID.

Bahay Tuluyan, Philippines ($68,000 for 24 months) EMpower’s 4^th and at the same time first multi-year grant to Bahay Tuluyan Foundation (BT), will enable the organisation to run its vocational training programme in hospitality and agriculture as well as its Independent Living Skills Programme (ILSP) which includes e.g. career training and 21st century life skills including such as how to manage their health and finances for 160 young people 15-24 years old.

Yayasan Ekoturisme Indonesia (Each Bali Poverty Project), Indonesia ($93,000 for 24 months) EMpower’s 5th grant to Yayasan Ekoturisme Indonesia will enable 151 young people 12-19 years old to participate in its holistic programme of youth empowerment, which will equip young people, amongst others, with 21st century skills as computer or English language skills, train them with job readiness skills and will promote gender equality, prevent early marriage and advance their health.

The Women’s Foundation, Hong Kong ($35,000 for 12 months) EMpower’s 1st grant to The Women’s Foundation Limited (TWF) will strengthen their Girls Go Tech (GGT) programme for 700 girls and young women 14-18 years old. The GGT programme consists of self-directed online computer courses coupled with online tutoring as well as company visits and career guidance sessions to enhance girls interest in science, technology and engineering careers.

Teen’s Key- young Women Development Network Limited, Hong Kong ($33,500 for 12 months) EMpower’s 1st grant to Teen’s Key - Young Women Development Network Limited will support a youth-centered workshop series to develop with and for young people 12-18 years old content for a website for young people of this age group living in Hong Kong on sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR).
