Position Summary

The HK Development Manager is the first point of contact for EMpower donors in Hong Kong, and is responsible for maintaining and increasing the organisation’s support from a diverse portfolio of funders, to include corporations, foundations, individuals, and other sources, with a special emphasis on securing long-term relationships with corporate and foundation partners.

Primary Responsibilities

The Development Manager is responsible for sustaining and increasing support from existing funders and supporting the cultivation and solicitation of new funders. The duties that follow represent the primary responsibilities for this role. All employees are responsible for performing other duties as assigned. Primary responsibilities for this role include the following:

Build development approaches and capability in region:

  • Personally drive fundraising solicitations, working closely with the Regional Director of Fundraising to maintain excellent relationships with existing supporters and cultivating new opportunities for the charity in Hong Kong
  • Drive activity towards a personal fundraising target, and set up and manage a programme of events for friend-raising and profile-building, working closely with the Development and Operations Associate, also based in Hong Kong
  • Work closely with the Regional Director of Fundraising, Asia, to develop an effective regional fundraising strategy that can deliver on EMpower’s growth potential.
  • Energise fundraising with goal of meeting targets and increasing revenue annually.
  • Work closely with the ESEA Programme Team to understand and increase profile and donations of them and their work, while being respectful of their time and the time of our grantee partners.
  • Expand resources for donor engagement that includes grantee partner visits and volunteer opportunities as well as institutionalising systems and processes.
  • Create and institutionalise a donor cultivation and engagement plan in coordination with the Regional Director of Fundraising
  • Provide ideas and ensure execution of board and donor communications, fundraising materials, online appeals and others as needed in collaboration with the Communications team.
  • Develop enhanced prospect and donor database capabilities with the development and communications team members globally.
  • Ensure ongoing consistent reporting on Development.

Expand donor base and diversity to new audiences:

  • Broaden and diversify EMpower’s regional donor base, by identifying new prospects and opening up new sources of funding, including younger professionals in finance sector.
  • Develop new appeals to individual donors.
  • Steward a portfolio of donors and prospects and support VP, Development and the regional Board with their portfolios.

Events:

  • Lead development for Annual Gala Dinner and other annual events to meet or exceed revenue targets.
  • Organise salon dinner events, brown bag lunches and other forums in the region to raise awareness about EMpower with new audiences and potential donors, and to deepen engagement with existing donors.
  • Lead in forming and leading Event committees that are highly engaged and impactful.
  • Represent EMpower at annual and regional events as needed.

Education, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

The Development Manager spearheads fundraising efforts to improve the lives and horizons of marginalised young people ages 10-24 in emerging market countries. The education, knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position are as follows:

  • At least 5 years of related experience, either from a direct setting or transferable skills.
  • University degree preferred but not required.
  • Strong English speaking and writing abilities required. (Mandarin / Cantonese speaking abilities is preferred although not required).
  • Commitment to EMpower’s mission, passionate about philanthropy and knowledgeable about and interested in market economics.
  • Experience with major gifts, sales, corporate partnerships, events, prospecting and working with volunteers and board members are essential.
  • Comfortable engaging with diverse funders, including financial professionals, from many nationalities and with different motivations for giving. 
  • Proven ability to gain respect and support from a broad constituency.
  • Experience in fundraising software and/or databases, as well as MS Office applications and other communications systems.
  • Experience in managing and mentoring staff, able to work virtually with a team across multiple time zones (requiring some morning/evening calls), and demonstrated capacity for effective teamwork.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with culturally diverse audiences with strong personalities, including solid public presentation and writing skills.
  • Adept at developing proposals, solicitation letters, donor correspondence, and other kinds of material for publication.
  • "Doer" who will work hands-on in developing and executing a variety of fundraising activities ranging from the internal day-to-day, to the highly creative, external and visible. Energetic, alert, creative, hardworking, able to take immediate action when needed, recognises and exploits success, and triage failure when necessary. Emotionally mature with a sense of humor and grace under pressure.

  • Ability to travel in the region, as needed.

  • This role routinely uses the English language to engage with internal and external stakeholders by phone, email, and in person. The employee is expected to be able to accurately exchange information with these stakeholders.
  • Our office location is in New Street, Sai Ying Pun We operate a hybrid policy with one day in the office in addition to any meetings taking place in HK and attendance at our events which often take place in the evenings.
  • Our policy also supports hybrid working, including the ability to work from anywhere for 4 weeks per year
