Communications and Marketing Manager

This is an exciting time for a dynamic professional to take EMpower’s communications to the next level. Building on amazing ingredients, we are poised for and want to capitalize on more impactful and visible communications to: mobilize funds, share meaningful stories by and about youth as change-makers, and agilely share insights and resources with grantee partner and peer colleagues to build the eco-system of effective youth development.

EMpower, a global philanthropic organization, is dedicated to improving the lives and horizons of marginalized young people ages 10-24 in 15 emerging market countries in Africa, Asia, Latin America, Russia and Turkey. Through grants and other supports, EMpower partners with over 100 local organizations working to strengthen the education and livelihoods of young people, and to build their resilience, self-confidence and well-being. EMpower has offices in Hong Kong, India (Delhi), Singapore, London and New York, as well as program staff in Istanbul and Freetown, Sierra Leone.

The role is responsible for driving a significant increase in the profile of EMpower’s brand through media relations and marketing strategies, increasing the level and impact of digital engagement, and improving the quality and consistency of our communications to our grantee partners and donors. The job requires someone who is strategic and can lead, yet also has hands-on “roll up sleeves” responsibilities to take EMpower’s communications from good to great. We seek someone who starts every day enthusiastically thinking and executing how to communicate the compelling work EMpower is doing to enable young people to thrive.

Responsibilities

Strategy

  • Aligning with EMpower’s organizational priorities, develop a communications strategy to best support organizational growth and fundraising, engagement of stakeholders, and information sharing with grantee partners and colleagues.
  • Increase use of metrics to understand and pivot based on reach, engagement and other desirable outcomes of communications – shape prioritized strategy and continually refine tactics accordingly
  • Identify opportunities to build visibility and profile of EMpower’s work and the impact created with, for and by youth and grantee partners
  • Increase use of video for story telling purposes
  • Increase EMpower’s capability for, connections to, and presence in traditional media

Management

  • Develop and manage the annual work plan and budget for Communications
  • Manage a small team of globally based professionals (currently one full-time and two part-time)
  • Create and manage an annual editorial calendar delivering an arc of strategic messaging
  • As needed, identify and supervise freelance support across EMpower regions and ensure oversight and brand consistency
  • Cross-functional collaboration
  • Work through colleagues in each EMpower region to ensure we fully communicate the impact generated by our work
  • Work closely with Development colleagues to deliver compelling donor-facing messaging
  • Work closely with Program colleagues to most effectively share learnings and tools with peers, grantee partners, and the sector

Skills

  • Significant communications experience in an international / NGO or nonprofit environment
  • Outstanding English writing and editing abilities, with the ability to create impactful messaging that will engage and influence EMpower’s wide variety of audiences
  • Able to use and develop both stories and data to regularly communicate on EMpower’s and grantee partners’ impact
  • Demonstrated and strong strategic messaging capabilities – charting direction, aligning messaging across platforms and continually looking for opportunities to deliver messages
  • Strong project management skills – able to set and keep realistic deadlines and keep multiple projects on track
  • Skilled manager using a coaching approach – able to bring out the best performance of team members, support their growth and collaboration within team and with other teams, and ensure their work focus is aligned towards organizational priorities
  • Strong media skills – both traditional and digital media.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage a busy personal workload, whilst also balancing team priorities and projects
  • Attention to detail, and commitment to ensuring excellent execution of all products including conformance to Style Guide (brand guidance)
  • Lead, manage and monitor key metrics to assess the effectiveness of our communications and profile-building, and adapt strategies and approaches on the basis of data and learnings
